Dr. Thomas Gazda on a New Direction in Treating Depression
Dr. Thomas Gazda was recently featured on Your Life Arizona to discuss upcoming clinical trials at IMA Clinical Research focused on Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). In the segment, Dr. Gazda explained the critical difference between everyday sadness and the persistent, debilitating nature of clinical depression.
Symptoms of MDD can include sleep disturbances, a flat emotional state, anxiety, excessive guilt, loss of appetite, and most seriously, suicidal thoughts. Alarmingly, depression is linked to approximately 60% of all suicides.
Clinical trials are exploring approaches that target specific potassium channels involved in mood regulation. By helping these channels function more normally, there may be a reduction in depression symptoms with fewer side effects than traditional antidepressants—such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction.
Most importantly, investigational treatments could help individuals rediscover passion and joy in life.
