Grant Garbo, MD - Principal Investigator Spotlight
Transcript
So I was fortunate to discover research while considering a career change. I have always enjoyed learning and was approached by recruiter for Clinical Research as an investigator. And during this role, I was trained by an incredibly experienced team of investigators, directors and executive directors, and it was a fantastic opportunity to deepen my understanding and skills in research.
Impact Research Has For Patients
One of the most rewarding aspects is witnessing the direct impact of our research on improving patient outcomes. Seeing a treatment move forward from trial phase to becoming standard of care, and knowing that our work has contributed to alleviating patient suffering and enhancing quality of life is incredibly fulfilling.
Background In Emergency Medicine
Multitasking is a critical skill in emergency medicine, for simultaneous management of multiple patients and conditions is routine. In clinical trials, this skill translates to effectively coordinating patient visits, data collection, protocol adherence. For example, I managed multiple participants with varying needs, ensuring timely data entry and addressing individual concerns from both the patients and monitors, which led to higher patient satisfaction and retention.
The fast paced and unpredictable nature of emergency medicine has honed my ability to make rapid, evidence based decisions under pressure. This is crucial when managing patient care in clinical trials. Specific skills include thorough patient assessments, acute problem solving, clear, concise communication which are all essential for ensuring participant safety and adherence to trial protocols.
Diversity At Our San Antonio Site
Diversity in research is crucial because it enhances the utility of the collected data. By including subjects from a broad range of backgrounds, we can identify and address issues more comprehensively. The San Antonio site contribute significantly to this diversity, given our Hispanic population. Their communication and patient interaction fosters a supportive and understanding environment, encouraging participants to remain committed to the trial.
Why IMA Clinical Research?
The San Antonio branch in particular is intriguing as it has been a successful standalone clinical research site. The team is composed of highly skilled professionals I’m constantly impressed with the level of experience. I’m excited to learn from the site and contribute to IMA’s development as a national research company. Being part of such an ambitious endeavor is truly motivating.
